The Michigan Senate has approved a four-year limit on cash assistance welfare benefits. The 48-month cap is part of Republican plans to balance the state budget.

Come October 1st, 12,600 families will likely lose benefits averaging a little more than $500 dollars a month. The measure is expected to win the approval of the state House and Governor Rick Snyder, who is relying in the $60 million dollars in savings to keep the budget balanced.

The vote on time limits broke along party lines.

Democratic state Senator Morris Hood: "What's going to happen to those folks? Where are those 12,000 people going to go the next day?"

"We can't do everything for everybody," says Republican state Senator Mark Jansen. "I think when we say to people, you have a four-year maximum that you can use these services, every month counts and so I think they will be motivated way before four years are over with to go out and start looking for other opportunities."

Michigan's welfare time limits would be among the strictest in the Midwest. Indiana limits benefits for adults to two years, with no limit on benefits for children.

Gilda Jacobs, president of the Michigan League for Human Services, says: "We really don't know what the unintended consequences are going to be. I do not believe that the faith community and the non-profit world has the ability to absorb folks who are going to need extra help."

Low-income families will still qualify for food assistance and Medicaid.

The measure will allow people on public assistance to earn more before losing benefits. It will also exempt parents and spouses caring for a handicapped person from the time limit.

four years should be ample time for someone to get their shit together so i have no prob with it especially considering the fact that michigan is currently experiencing a fiscal nightmare. i live there so i know all to well....

this ia a lil off topic but what confuses me the most is when the middle class and poor are quick to call for gov to cut funding for social programs or call for the gov to cut gov jobs first instead of going after corporations or the wealthy. people need to realize that the trickle down effect is bullshit and start voting for their own self interest. the bush tax cuts did not create jobs. and public aid only makes up about 2% of the budget, which is why despite YEARS of reducing benefits, no real impact can be made by doing this and also it takes this money out of the economy. military spending and medicaid/medicare and social sec. take more money that ANYTHING else. and these big corporations pay little to no taxes already.

and really if Fortune 500 companies paid their fair share in taxes, it would be enough to fund ALL PUBLIC AID PROGRAMS. Fortune 500 companies earned 10 trillion dollars last year, and that is just 500 companies and there are millions of companies in America. America spend half a trillion dollars on public aid last year.

My husband & I struggle from paycheck to paycheck and sure do wish it was easier for us and our family but I do NOT expect that the wealthy should give me a handout just because they have it. Whether they got it easily from a wealthy family member or worked their a$$ off to get where they are, it is their money and I have no business getting any of it. If they choose to spread the wealth on their own...then great..otherwise leave them alone!
I believe that the public assistance should be there for the families who DO work and are still having trouble, that is who needs it. Quit handing out all our hard earned dollars to slugs that are a consistent drain on society. If you’re too lazy to work then you don’t deserve any help from any of us who are getting up early and going to work after dropping our children off at daycare. Hey, I would have loved to quit my job and not have been deprived of that quality time with my children, but I had a responsibility. The responsibility to feed the children I created, pay for the roof over their heads and the shoes on their feet. The working people in society did not ask me to create children I could not care for so that they could pay for them. I mean COME ON!!!
For instance, get a load of this…soak it all in and let me know what you think…I can't afford to go pick up my glasses so they sit at the eye doctors office not doing me a bit of good, while my tax dollars paid for the glasses of a 20 year old girl who lost parental rights of 2 children and just popped out another one the other day. Never mind that if his car isn't working, he can't get to work and could lose his job. Then how would he keep paying her way in life? Let alone his own and the little boy he saved from the system??????
The whole thing infuriates me and I can't even wrap my head around it all.
Why can't these "people" be made to get their tubes tied??? Because it would infringe on their "rights". So, this girl could feasibly have a baby every year for the next 20 to 25 years and there is nothing anyone can do to stop her. What about our rights? There should be a limit. But with today's economy this shit is a bit of a reach. Daycare is expensive for a single parent. What good would food stamps and Medicare do when you're on the streets. This shit should have been enacted before the recession. But let's not close the loop holes in the tax system and let these rich niggaz keep record profits.

No one is asking the rich for handouts. The just should pay more in taxes. You tax a person making 20,000 a year and a person making 250,000 a year is not the same at the current tax rate. Miss me with that shit.

Here in WI you can only be on welfare for 2 years and during that time you either have to be in school or attend these job skills classes they have.
