If it's not a national chain like Walmart,Best Buy,etc...apply in person
That way, you can meet with a manager and when you call to follow up, there's a greater chance they remember you

Any retail store in the mall like Footlocker...

Banks require you to apply online and submit a resume with the online application...and they require you to take a personlaity test to see if you are worth interviewing

Apply online...then if you want to expedite the process, call or show up...then when they try to refer you to the website tell those f*ckers you did that already, then ask to speak with a hiring manager.

I'd do both. Employers must get thousands and hundreds of thousands of resumes in the span of a week. Its easy for them to pass u by as they look at the next resume. A lot of dudes are sending resumes in to many diff't employers hoping for a call back from atleast 1 of em while theyre on to the next one. I'd apply online AND show up in person. The interaction w/ ppl can leave an impression on them that leads them to believe u may actually be the man for the job.
