What Qualifies A Couple For A Marriage License?

I was just thinking about this....for a drivers' license you have to take a drivers ed course and/or a written test and a behind the wheel test. For a gun license there's some type of waiting period and a background check if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not close to anyone newly married so I don't know the process, but is there any type of checkup on the couple or do they just pay for the license and that's it? And I'm not talkin about those last second Vegas weddings. I mean a legit wedding.

Seems like too many marriages have failed to not make sure people are at least semi compatible.

Well....basically, you go to your local courthouse, and obtain the license from the county clerk. Both of you must be present, and present proper ID. In the case of my sister, they had to show that they had marriage counseling before they were able to obtain the license. You have about 30 days for the license to be valid. Once you are married, you go back to the county clerk's office and sign the license.

As long as you pay your money for the license, the State could give no fuck if you are compatible or not. That's between the two persons signing on the line.

ah ok. do you know if this proof of marriage counseling just in your county or is this everywhere? other married people/people familiar with the process can speak on this as well.

it's just lopsided that it seems i had to do more to drive legally than i would have to do to get married. obviously just because someone is a licensed driver doesn't guarantee s/he is a good driver or will never have an accident, but...yea.

i think they used to require 30 days of counseling and hiv tests in mi, but i don't think they do anymore, we didn't have to do any of that when i got married in 2007. basically we paid the money, then you have to wait for like 3 days to get the license and you have 30 days to pick it up or change your mind. after that you take it to your official to sign along with you two and your 2 witnesses, and they will mail the license to the city to be put on record.

if you're married then more than likely there will be kids involved or already are. that's a public safety issue as well.

You need both party's birth cirtificate and only one needs to present. Fill out a sheet of paper and youre good to go. Well you have about 30 days to get married or you have to do it all over again.
