if rappers didn't rap about THEIR money and THEIR success, would we still listen?

i was watching the thread about baby being interviewed about the lil wayne deal, and the thread about 50 cent talking about his new album.

It got me thinking, would people still listen to hip hop if the artists didn't rap about how much money they were earning or how great THEY themselves, the artists claim to be. In the fifty interview, fifty said that he cannot compare album sales no more because he has ALREADY done that, thats OLD to HIM so he trying to come at a different tip, lets see how that turns out...

On the other hand, the Baby interview is about the supposed $150, 000,000 that Wayne was meant to have resigned for, and we all should know by now the formula to Wayne tracks, what he raps about, what he stands for, young MONEY cash MONEY.


So once again, my question is will we as 'fans' ever get tired of 'success' rap? if rappers didn't rap about THEIR money and THEIR success, would we still listen?

I know i would, but alot of people wouldn't.

Alot of people especially nowadays wanna live vigorously through these entertainers. So when a certain rapper scores a multi-million dollar deal they feel like they've scored a piece of the deal and so on.

So it depends on who you're asking.

I like seeing certain artists succeed (like Slaughterhouse/Royce now), but I don't like hearing about money in the music I listen to. My favorite MCs don't make that kind of music.

I would my favorite people to listen to arent bragging about money and success anyway. Now that i think about it maybe this is why i cringe when someone im rooting for goes mainstream cause i dont want to hear then brag alll the time. good thread @Axel

Rappers should rap about what they know. Dudes like the Birdman, all he know is money so I don't expect him to drop a Distant Relatives with Damien Marley.

the thing about success everyone would like to have it ... so imo no ... thier means of success may become null void ... but the idea of success imo will never go stale ... thats what most folks are after or fantasize about .... and just the fact the vehicle of success is the best way to promote products most folks cant afford is another reason why it wont go stale ... not too many artist in 2012 are going to turn down endorsement $$$$$$$$

But simultaneously, why is Birdman rapping? He's a label executive. He shouldn't be rapping because A) He has nothing to rap about (it's just exorbitant amounts of money for him) and B) He should develop and put out all those no-name mofuckas he decided to sign to his label.

Yeah birdmans accomplished alot. Who am i to tell him not to rap he can rap if he chooses but i honestly skip his verse on every song he is on. He isnt entertaining and he isnt saying anything. Its like im being bullshitted everytime hes on a track. And I agree yea it is time for them to life. Im pretty sure he worked pretty hard.

You still go through trials and tribulations at that age, and you haven't covered all the trials and tribulations you've experienced in life to get to that point. There's no way you could have done that. But more importantly, as you get older you should be more mature, and if you gain that amount of money you should start looking past the money.

There's something called wisdom... and I just wish some of the successful OGs tried dropping it a little more. Kinda like what Em did on Recovery.

At the end of the day, rap has always been about a dude w/ a big ass chain telling you how much of the shit he is.Rakim wore jewels and rapped about being paid in full.I think ppl should have a lot of topics, but when you getting money ain't nothing else to talk about

That's true... but at least Rakim was creative with it. And he covered a lot of different topics... it wasn't just money.

surprisingly YES ... i have a friend who is actually a fan of birdman and have said that he enjoys his music many times with out hesitation even tho i didnt even ask LOL ... shit boggles my mind lol ...

however imo birdman is doing it right ... in this day and age imo if you own a label or imprint sign yourself as an artist as well and put your face on that brand .... so you dont get dame dashed ...!!!!!!! I think ppl would have no choice but will the transition be smooth? Doubt it off the simple fact the culture in the US is "Get Money! Maintain Money". We are a success and Money driven society and the people who dont have it or not use to having it usually talk about it the most. The dude who created FUBU said the illest shit on Shark Tank

its just like when an artist first come into the game, their going to talk about their struggles...

once you get fame, it's hard not to talk about how much you make, or how materialistic you are.

and if u ask me that how it should go ... show that progression ... but not progressing in my opinion your holding up the lane for others to progress as well and to update the situation ... let the cycle flow ....

i feel like albums used to be a couple "big money" tracks and then the rest were some thoughtful or storytelling songs, but now its the complete opposite and the whole album is the artist reaching for singles and then maybe one deep track

it gets annoying..as listener we've heard it all before...we know the cars, homes, and clothing lines already they just mix up the words a little
