These two are some of snoops best songs and theyre hardly ever mentioned. The album is never mentioned and it was pretty dope. Not Doggystyle status but its up there. youtu.be/TXa9idx25Vc
Snoop did a complete 180 with this album. Doggystyle was a masterpiece of music and fans wanted Doggfather to be the same young hungry Snoop but Snoop matured and gave fans a grown up Snoop. Fans werent ready.
Doggystyle was a classic. One of the best albums in hip hop history. It's hard to follow up a classic. With the exception of Nas, most rappers follow up to a classic doesn't measure up.
Snoop did a complete 180 with this album. Doggystyle was a masterpiece of music and fans wanted Doggfather to be the same young hungry Snoop but Snoop matured and gave fans a grown up Snoop. Fans werent ready.
Those reasons are valid plus..
If you were Snoop back then almost facing a 25 to life, you would do an 180 degree turn too.
didn't the 7 Day theory come out a few weeks before that album dropped?
Maybe it got overshadowed?
The Whole East Coast West Coast beef, Life After Death & Makaveli record probably sucked a lot of attention away from albums that were droppin in that year...
Uncle Snoop was spooked cuh , sad to say but Pac had just got shot shit was real im them streets no Dre either nigga had alot of shit on his mind. I liked some songs on it tho * shrugs *
on a side note... Snoop actually wanted to work with Biggie... i mean, i think Snoop tried to be more neutral during that time more than anybody else, because he wasn't really involved in the way Pac was with Biggie and the Bad Boy beef..
plus around the time Pac was recording 7 Day Theory, he was probably recording Dogg Father in the same studio, and the tension in the studio was crazy, because everybody stayed with their clique during that time... Also take into consideration that Snoop wasn't apart of Pac's last album.. Pac had issues with Dre, and Dre was close with Snoop...
So maybe everything that been happening at that time, effected the outcome of the production of the album, since Dre left Death Row and was beginning Aftermath... The tension of the east coast, west coast beef, and everybody stayed heavily close to their peers, Pac's death, the destruction of Death Row, Suge's nack of extortion and his escape..
and essentially Snoop's trial... So there's a lot of factors of why the album didn't sound as good as it should...
Doggystyle came out around the time, Dre left NWA to start up at Death Row, Snoop's hunger... and his verses which contributed to the beef with Eazy n Dre, and Tim Dog...
and Snoop had a different style, heavily different from today's Current Snoop Dogg... plus Dre's production...
Overall, Tha Doggfather was a scattershot album. Fact is, your records will always be examined more closely after you've dropped a classic, and Tha Doggfather paled in comparison to DoggyStyle. In his prime, Dr. Dre was known for producing seamless albums, with tracks that blended into one another. Without Dre around for Tha Doggfather, Snoop was left on his on for the first time, to assemble an entire album by himself.
Tha Doggfather had some decent tracks: "Doggfather", "Downtown Assassins", "Snoop's Upside Ya Head", etc. But it sounded like an assortment of average cuts just thrown together, not a complete album. I will say though, Snoop was dealing with the Woldermariam murder trial for all of 1995 and early '96, so it's understandable if he couldn't really focus on music until his acquittal. Still, whether it's fair or not, DoggyStyle set the standard, and Tha Doggfather didn't come close to measuring up.
