Several reportedly shot near Auburn University

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Several people were shot at an apartment complex near Auburn University when a fight broke out during a pool party, authorities and a witness said Sunday.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson told the Opelika-Auburn News that police were called Saturday night. He did not say who was shot or discuss their conditions. An Auburn University spokesman declined to confirm local reports that former or current players were among the victims. Late Sunday morning, coroner's officials also refused to say if anyone had died.

Turquorius Vines, 23, said he was at the pool party Saturday evening at the University Heights apartments with one of his friends. He said he and his friend were approached by two other men who started arguing with them over a woman.

Vines said he punched one of the men, while his friend hit both of the men over the head with a bottle. Either one or both of the two men then started shooting, he said. He said his friend was shot and killed, while two others also were hit by gunfire. Vines said he had never before seen the men who he had been arguing with.

"It's like I lost a lung," Vines said of his friend. "I don't know how I'm going to survive this." Several emergency vehicles had converged overnight around the University Heights apartment complex where reports indicated a number of students who attend Auburn University typically reside. The building was swathed in yellow police tape.

It appeared that the shooting happened in an archway near the apartment complex information center, near the edge of the parking lot. Five uniformed officers guarded the area, which was sealed off with crime scene tape, and a handful of crime scene investigators were at work.

After daybreak Sunday, several uniformed officers stood near a disaster relief trailer parked at the building's entrance, which appeared to be a sort of command center. Some bystanders milled about, looking on at the scene.

An Auburn police dispatcher contacted by The Associated Press said early Sunday she had no immediate information. Police did not immediately return repeated telephone messages seeking comment. Auburn University campus police said they had no information and referred calls to city police.

Vasha Hunt, a photographer with the Opelika-Auburn News, was at the apartment complex hours earlier and told the AP by telephone before dawn that authorities had set up a white tent there where there was a lot of activity. He said police kept a number of bystanders back for hours away from the scene.

Hunt said at least some of those who initially gathered outside appeared to be residents waiting for permission to enter their apartments.

Reports: Three Dead, Including Two Former Football Players, After Shooting At Auburn Off-Campus Party

Details are still sketchy, but it appears a shooting took place at an Auburn University off-campus housing complex that is reportedly home to many Auburn athletes. The shooting took place at a party at the complex at some time around 9:30 p.m., according to police chief Tommy Dawson. A press conference is reportedly scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

According to Turquorius Vines, a participant who is not an Auburn student, the incident at University Heights apartments took place because of an argument over a girl he and a friend had with two strangers at the party.
The party "went from us chilling with all these females to a massacre for no reason at all," Vines said. "It happened so quick, in about a second."

Vines reportedly punched one of the individuals, and the friend hit another over the head with a bottle. The strangers then began shooting.

Police have not revealed many details as of yet, but there are many reports on Twitter that at least two football players were killed in the shooting. ABC is reporting that three players were involved in the shooting and two former players have in fact died as a result.
The Auburn Police Department has not identified any of the victims or their conditions, but according to a family member and tweets from alumni and local reporters, two football players — Ladarious Phillips and Ed Christian — were shot and killed, while another player, Eric Mack, remains hospitalized.

Phillips' mother confirmed to ABC that her son was killed last night, but does not know the details around the shooting. In all three people have been confirmed dead and two others seriously injured.

    We will update accordingly.

Update 3:25 p.m.: According to the Journal-Constitution, the three men who have died are Phillips, Christian and Demario Pitts, a 20-year-old from Opelika. More:
One more victim, 20-year-old John Robertson, is "fighting for his life" at University of Alabama Birmingham hospital, Auburn Police chief Tommy Dawson told reporters Sunday afternoon.
Two more men, Xavier Moss, 19, and sophomore Tigers offensive lineman Eric Mack suffered minor injuries, police said.

none of the dudes on the football team had anything to do with that bullshit, they were just innocent bystanders. Even the police said this on the televised press conferences. I agree with the sentiment about hitting someone with a bottle and expecting the turn the other cheek bullshit.

The shit was very senseless and just downright depressing all around.
