@GeE-757 Nas didnt have any single that charted well, if we had a song like ASTHON Music that charted well and had alot of radio play and well play on tv everyday life is good would be makin 500k first week cuz this album sold 150k first week with no really good single! RICK ROSS Still better do 400-500k or its a flop,,, i say it because rick ross group have the most buzz in the game right now and ross been on every rappers singles lately and he got a big buzz now! SO IF NOT 400-500K ITS A FLOP!! ATLEAST OVER 300!

Stop making excuses.. if I remember correctly Eminem didnt have a huge single prior to 'Relapse' dropping.. he still did #'s.

Same as with WTT.. at this point, if you're one of raps upper echelon u don't need a buzz, ur name alone will sell records bcuz fans can trust that u will deliver a dope product... DMX dropped Flesh of my Flesh with no single or video back in 99'... if Hov sais his album is coming out on xmas day, no song, no video, he's still selling more than 150k... fact.

    Nas lost

Eminem fanbase & jay fanbase is people that comes from village, that have big money.. most of Nas fans comes from the Ghetto with no money..Street niggas go and cop Nas album. don't talk bout back in 99 u faggot nas did 470k first week back in the days with no higgh selling singles!! MORON!!
    150K IS GREAT!

ILLMATIC DROPPED 1994 and LIFE IS GOOD 2012 and we made 150k first week how Nas lost??? FAGGOT !! SHUT UP!

Jay's fans come from the village...that's funny. I do agree he has a more diverse fan base, but there are hood niggas that still fuck with Jay & hood niggas that don't fuck with Nas. It is what it is. Some cats don't want to hear what he has to say. Some people don't like the way he says shit. Some people don't like his beat selection. I respect Nas for making the kind of albums he makes. You can't appeal to everyone so you make what you feel comfortable with & just roll with it.. I always cop his shit because I've been a fan since day one. I listen to his old shit more, but I can't deny the brother's talent.

Mobb Deep isn't all that. I don't care about sales really. I figured Nas would be about the 150K mark, I didn't think hed debut at #1 though. That's a great start in today's climate.

MMG is on the radio and on TV all day, every damn day and only sold 179K, that album has been out about a month right?

Nas did 86% of what MMG has done in a single week and that's without their promotion, buzz or a highly successful single.

I fail to see how this is a loss.

It proves Nas is still relevant to a large audience but even if he wasn't, Life Is Good is still a great album...period.

Music matters, not this bullshit record sales.

    Let me educate you:

Intelligent people don't compare solo-album sales to label-compilation sales unless we want to put on our snow-suits and start asking why Emenims label compilation "The Re-Up" only sold 1 million copies while his most recent album sold 4 million copies.

You need to find a better comparison or else you will undermine your own argument when somebody comes along and reminds you that Lupe Fiasco did 200K first week last year or that Mac Miller did 144K first week last year (on an indie) or that MMG's Wale did 165K first week last year.

Life is Good is an excellent album regardless of how much it sells.

    Amen bro!
Its like as long as Nas has been out Ive never been compelled to buy his album. His rhymes rarely have an impact and lack emphasis. I feel like his rhymes run on and its hard to take time to process what he says. I wont deny he has skill but i feel hes overrated.

    year.
Life is Good is an excellent album regardless of
    how much it sells.

Its not really relevant because Re-Up is old as hell, its like 5 years old. Eminem was able to push D12 & a bunch of unknowns to respectable sales they wouldn't have gotten on their own anyway, its what he and other super-marketable artists do. And let's not forget 50 Cent was apart of that re-up fiasco as well.

That's perfectly fine about Lupe & Mac they are cool with me and considering they also didn't get the play MMG does makes what they did even more amazing. Especially Mac Miller considering he is on an Indie label and I never saw one video or heard any singles.

Wale also piled his album with RNB cats and chicks went and bought it but that's fine. I'm a Wale fan too by the way even though I preferred Attention Deficit to Ambition I understand the increased visibility helped him a lot. Lotus Flower Bomb did its job, I'm sure he's happy with its performance.

I'm cool with the sales of Mac, Lupe, Wale & Nas. In fact I won't even remember this shit in a couple weeks. The music speaks for itself...that's all that matters.

The radio and Viacom (MTV/BET) can play niggas all day and they still barely lead the pack. I'm not entirely sure who the onus is on to fix that, hell I'm not even sure its a problem but it says a lot about the state of the game.

Nas' name still carries weight 20 years into his career as he pushes 40 years old. Nas never sold records like Jay, 50, Wayne & Em but he managed to put out a record that didn't have any real successful singles and do well despite that fact.

He could have sold 20k copies and that would have been alright. I recognize he's no juggernaut in the market department, he just does what he always does and that's make great albums. It just so happens he got a little extra umph with debuting #1 this time around.

Once Nicki Minaj only did 220k first week, plus Chris Brown & Usher did 135k first week recently I said wow.
My Expectations went down for Life is Good debut. He & Def Jam couldn't have marketed this album any better.

I thought 150-200k because of the push & good press. 200k or better is good for an artist of Nas caliber. 150k is just okay or solid. 150k was the floor.

It's will probably stall out in 400k range but will still be certified Gold because Def Jam will ship 500k to the stores because of the tremendous press the album has received.
  • guess nas stans feel like they not gonna need that counseling this wk

Nothing against Nas but I'd say it is sort of underwhelming..... they were promoting that album pretty heavy. I thought it would've done close to double what it did.

Conversely, the quality of music on that album makes the sales irrelevant. Nobody gonna be remembering the exact numbers it did in the first week, but we will remember the music. Sure he might not have the big sales but he does still have the ability to drop classic material and reaffirm his place as one of the best MCs in the game. Almost 20 years later and we still know Nas name.

& BTW Streets Disciple was a double album.... he's never been a big seller out the gate but he's always gone platinum. I'm curious to see what Rick Ross does in the first week, there's no way he's topping this.

No they didnt Nas could put Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Drake, Jay Z if he wanted to sell 250k+ but nah he kept it real.

Nas didnt have any singles that charted well. if they had that it could be 250k atleast

For this climate, those are respectable numbers. The highest selling album released in 2012 sold around 970K which was Lionel Richie's Tuskeegee. It did 199K in it's first week. When just under platinum has been the ceiling for releases in 2012, selling over 10% of that in the first week is respectable.

Look their will be no more super selling rappers any more those days are over i predict the only rappers that will sell a lot of albums from now on will be those connected to jay-z or kanye. Ross is going to flop and WAYNE next album won't live up to his previous. Drake will still sell but he's not a rapper, any body else will be lucky to reach 500,000.

This will be bad for hip-hop's bank account but will be good for it's soul because the music will get better. All the rappers who don't respect the artform and just see rap as an easy way to get money will slowly die off, leaving the real ARTIST to thrive.

Man would I love for that to happen.

Name one rapper who debuted in 1994 that could still sell 150k first week right now if not total album sales? No one.
