Common Saddened By Chicago Gang Violence

common-500.jpg?w=500&h=300

COMMON: "First of all, I feel hurt by it. I feel saddened by what’s going on, very concerned, and like I have to have a responsibility in it. What I would say to young people is that you have a whole world out there to do something great in, no matter what circumstance you were born in or around. You can accomplish anything you dream of, and, the things you want for your life; happiness, success, love — all those things to grow as a human being. To make choices that involve yourself in any type of violence and doing something negative towards another human being is going in the opposite direction of what your goals and what your vision is for yourself. I would encourage people and say “man, we gotta recognize that that human being you damaging is a part of you and is a reflection of God, and it’s also a factor in your future because when you do something to damage someone else, it’s going to affect the rest of your life.” Nobody wants to live in a sad state in their lives and you can create your own dreams and your own happiness if you just work towards it and believe in it and make those choices that lead towards that".

The sandals and organic approach won't work with those types of niggas common. Chicago niggas are ANIMALISTIC.

Yea that shit gonna fall on deaf ears. Good comments but a hands on approach is needed. And not just from a Common or a Derrick Rose but city leaders all around.

And who are the leaders? See the thing is simple. People in the hood dont respect or listen to anyone or anything unless they scared of it. Now an example of what scares these so called tough dudes are the usually the big willie niggas in the hood. Theyre the only ones who these lil dudes will listen to. Unfortunately alot of them big willie dudes become that by being heartless so they could care less about teaching or helping the black community, at least 98% of them. Mix that with drugs, hunger for money, growing up without any morals or ethics its tough.

So if niggas really wanna change shit in the hood or w/e thats the only people theyll have to channel to make that change. Now a rapper can hook up wit them big willie dudes and try to get the youths ears but in turn that would mean that the rappers really just getting extorted. It has and still does happen tho. Thats basically what 2pac for example tried to do and look at how that turned out.

True that is the main problem. These kids need some leadership and guidance and once it's been established that they aren't getting that from home it's hard to reach them. I mentor kids and that shit is tough. They do listen to me and they do respect what I say to a certain extent b/c I'm from where they from. But once they leave it's hard to maintain when you have no form of guidance anywhere else in your life. They ask me all the time how are we supposed to trust what I'm telling them. It's hard to get through to a 13 year old that hard work and school is a bigger pay of than the streets. All them kids joining gangs are looking for love and acceptance and it's sad that the streets are showing them more love and acceptance than home or school. Now some of these kids are just ruthless regardless. Folks gotta step up for real. That's why it's good for Common to comment on the situation but it's up to the folks in that shit daily to do something. you can't save everybody but hopefully you can save some. Who in turn saves another.

This is true. The influence in the hood are some of the worst people to look up to.

Chicago and LA have the mentality of where a rapper is a lame and the gang leaders and drug dealers with street cred set the example.

I also blame WGCI for playing that drill music crap knowing it was gang influenced.

  • He needs to hook up with those violence interrupters who live and work in those hoods. If he's that sad about it, he needs to get off his ass and touch down with real folk (or peoples, as the case may be).

MJ, Obama and Oprah . Three of the most succesful Blacks ever all came up in some for or fashion or are associated in some way with the Chi. Just a crazy dynamic . Dont know if its related or unreleated to the violence . But always thought that is was odd. Chicago is like the gaza strip .
