I don't think they are trying to repopulate Earth, I think they are actually trying to get off the planet in one piece. It seems to me that the premise is that Earth turned on the humans (as the humans destroyed the Earth) and a bunch of them took off. While flying close to the planet they crash on it, and now have to figure a way off.
