A Florida teenager ended up behind bars after police say she stole $13 from her mother's purse following a violent argument. According to the arrest report, Lauren Root, 18, of Edgewater, was riding in a car with her mother along State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach on Tuesday when Susan Kay Root confronted her daughter about her recent drug use.
During the fight, the 18-year-old allegedly snatched her mother's purse. Her mother, who was behind the wheel, tried to take the bag back, which caused her to swerve and nearly cause an accident. Susan Root, who was on her way to pick up her 11-year-old daughter from a hospital, pulled into a Citgo gas station, where she and her older daughter continued the tug-of-war over the purse.
When the mother finally let go of the bag, police say the 18-year-old grabbed a wad of cash from inside the purse and fled on foot, The Dayton Beach News-Journal reported. Police officers who responded to the scene tracked down Lauren Root to Jungle Road and Walker Street, and seized the stolen money, which amounted to only $13.
Susan Root told police that she did not want her daughter thrown in jail, just drug tested, but her pleas fell on deaf ears. The 18-year-old old was arrested on robbery charges and ordered held without bail at Volusia County Branch Jail. This is not Lauren Root's first run-in with the law. According to online records, the Florida teen was arrested December 3 for driving on a suspended or revoked license.
in a phone interview with the Daily Mail Thursday, a spokesperson for the New Smyrna Beach Police Department explained that because the alleged robbery was part of a domestic incident, Root will remain in jail until her arraignment.
