When the US dropped the gold standard in 1934 the Federal Reserve returned all the gold it held to the US Treasury. In return it was issued gold certificates with a set value of $42 per ounce. Since gold is worth $1600 the certificates have dropped incredibly in value.

This has been public knowledge since 1934 as the Fed was divested of gold by an act of Congress.
