At a screening for a new BET documentary, someone asked Lee if the network was going to aim for better programming, with Lee stating that, ”Over the 28 years I’ve been at BET, we’ve tried different shows, series and nightly news, and it’s always a matter of what are people going to show up to watch. We started a new show last week called Don’t Sleep! With T.J. Holmes, which is supposed to address these kinds of issues. It’s designed to be a mix of entertainment and news and commentary. We hoped it would have been a Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert-type show.”
Lee then went on to explain that the ratings game is what drives her to continue with content that is less than desirable:
“To be honest, the ratings haven’t been great in the past two weeks (referring to Holmes’ show). Our audience always says they want this kind of programming, but they don’t show up,” Lee said.

Cause BET doesn't promote any if its positive programming

Not only that, but most people that would pay attention to the positive programming have abandoned BET and never looked back. I can't tell you the last time I've watched BET. Even if they were running positive programming about it, I wouldn't know and wouldn't take the chance on that channel to watch anyway.

They need to face it. They torpedoed that channel and turned it into garbage. Now only people who want to watch BS even care about the channel.

If my TV is on BET, it's usually by accident. I would appreciate it if BET had shows that documented black history, kind of like Discovery and History Channel does for whites.

The problem with BET is that their ideal of black entertainment is centered around negative stereotypes of the black community. They get a black cast of characters and try to shoehorn them into a box of tired "black life" story lines. These usually of madea like subjects. Funny how black shows like the Cosby show, living single, different world, Martin, etc compared to today black shows are more innovative and those show been off the air for over 20years. Seems like black TV has taken a step back not forward in recent years.

Why not make a intelligent show with black cast that not only showcase issues within our community but also issues that plague humanity in a whole. Universal subjects that any race or group can relate to and understand.
this is what i was talkin bout... u must have not seen the new show " second generation wayans" i gave it a chance...

it has its corny spots but it is a show that could do good if niggas support it... dem shows u said above all have a common factor... they had money put into them and was on regular tv... i dont think there is a majority black show now on regular tv...

@ bolded btw have u been on "tv one" they have shows like that

That's all the channels I watch

I used to watch TLC when it was The Learning Channel in the 90's when they still aired educational programming. Now its a wasteland of reality shows that every other network rejected.

I remember TLC when it was off the chain. I used to watch that show where they showed you everything in surgery. That was my shit.

Yep damn shame too. The Discovery Channel has kinda gone that way too, but not quite as bad. That said the Science Channel is great.
