PlayStation 4 consoles made a minimal impact on Japan's console market, according to data released by Tokyo-based magazine Enterbrain and translated by consultant Dr. Serkan Toto.

The Sony console, which launched in Japan in February following its release in the West, saw revenue of 706.3 million yen during the first half of 2014 — only a slight increase from the 663.9 million yen earned during the first half of 2013.

According to data from Media Create, the PlayStation 4 has failed to sell more than 10,000 units in a single week in over two months in Japan. This places the console behind both Wii U and PlayStation Vita in popularity.

That's because there are no japanese games out for the system. Developers are sticking with ps3/vita because it has a bigger install base and it's cheaper to make games for it. Only reason vita is picking up steam there is because the psp has been discontinued.

    Yes.

There are 3 million Vitas in the hands of consumers out in Japan. There aren't even a million PS4's in the homes of consumers out in Japan.

This is no surprise though. The console market has been bleeding out there for quite a long while now. Even the 3DS which is the most successful 8th generation platform so far worldwide in terms of install base is trailing behind DS sales trajectory pretty badly out there. Keep in mind that damn near 16 million Japanese people own a Nintendo 3DS. Even a 16 million strong install base is seen as a failure in Japan compared to previous console generations. Crazy.
