Why do we take Music Critics Seriously?

What credentials do you have to have in order to critque music?

We all have ears, we all have opinions. We are all critics.

There should be no such thing as a professional critic. They get paid to state the same opinions we state on here for free.

Because of the way "musical critcs" are labeled, exposed, and financed, their opinions hold more weight in the industry and they have a huge influence over the opinions of others. Example, nobody was calling Kanyes new album a perfect masterpiece until Rolling Stone grew some balls and gave it a perfect rating. Then, everybody and their grandmother started praising Kanyes album like it came straight from the bible.

The media has such a huge impact over how people think. Why should Rolling Stones or Pitchforks wack ass review hold anymore weight than yours? Their opinion does not matter more than yours. They just have bigger assholes than you.

Stop reciting the opinions of others and develop your own damn opinions. Afterall, your the only one that can hear the music through your own ears.

^^^Dont let people like this tell you what "good" music is.

Put Rolling Stone and The Source back on the rack, and clean out your damn ears and try again.

I take it somewhat seriously, because I'm not a critic, I'm just a fan of the music. It's fun to see other opinions about a song or an album. I still enjoy albums that have gotten poor ratings from critics (Stillmatic) over albums that got a lot of love from critics (Street's Disciple). Ultimately, it's my own tastes that determine whether it's good or bad because it's all an opinion. The only upside to critical reviews is that they are professional and are somewhat bias free. There's a lot of critics that will stan an album or hate on an album harder than someone who isn't a professional though. I don't take those reviews serious.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what is good. Some opinions are more informed than others, but everyone can have their own opinion.

Now as for those American Idol judges you posted a picture of, there's more to it than what is good. Simon spent years in the business and not only makes judgment on what is "good", but evaluates which artists can be commercially successful. Idol wasn't about "who is the best singer", it's about who can be successful pop icon. Of course, the fact that the majority of American Idol winners were commercial busts doesn't make him look so great, but I definitely respect the ear some people have for recognizing a hit song when they hear. I don't have that ability. I'm always shocked at what becomes a #1 hit single.
