Final Fantasy... what went wrong?

ocelotocelot Posts: 8,312
I remember when FF 7, 8 , and 9 came out for the PS1...

those 3 were the best games for that gen and pretty much video game history...

all 3 had good stories, characters, and memorable music from Uematsu...

then X came and I personaly saw a slip, but still a great game... after X Final Fantasy was not what it used to be

FFXIII is the biggest disappointing game this gen...

what happened?

Square losing its touch?
Or am I out growing FF

Still checking for FFVsXIII

I did not follow FF too much growing up. I had 8 on the PS1 - loved it even though I didn't finish it.

I bought 7 recently on the PSN store and am thinking about buying 8. I haven't gotten too far in 7 though.

Maybe because I never really followed he series is why I wasn't disappointed in 13.

IMO they aren't/weren't innovative enough for this gen. Look at the likes of Bioware/Bethesda etc, their rpg's have moved on. evolved to the possibilities this gen can offer, they have taken this role playing game genre to a whole new level(think dragon age/ME/Fallout/oblivion etc). While Square is still stuck in the ps1/2 era, with lineair envirments/gameplay, I mean graphic wise it's all good, but it's basically the same stuff you played 10 years ago but with better graphics and different gameplay mechanics. I think a lot of Japanese developers are still stuck in the previous gens and lack innovation....

Didn't really have a problem with them, I liked them.

    Didn't like FF8 though.
  • FF8 was the only one I could ever be bothered to complete. Tried FF7 for the first time a couple of years back and got bored after an hour, and watching (and being bored) of one of my mates playing 10 was as far as I went with that. Why the series is apparently turning to shit? Dunno. Don't care. Sorry

On another note they should throw in a black main character, or at least a black leading lady. The Japanese/fanboys/internet would lose their shit over that

Nah, I don't think that they should go that route, most fans like the games the way they are now, so I think they are just fine for now.

I can dig it, but I'm not saying they have to go the bioware/obsidian route, just the way they evolved their games from last gen to this gen(think from last gen jade empire/knights of the old republic to this gen mass effect/dragon age), I mean we could all own the same game(DAO) but still play a different game due to the dozens/hundreds of scenarios, role playing game wise they took it to a whole other level while Square stood still imo

lol, imo if Square doesn't go with the times, they should change their genre from turn based rpg to turn based action adventure game.

Honestly FF7 is the only FF I ever completed, Chrono Trigger is by far the best RPG (and game period) I ever played
  • ocelotocelot Posts: 8,312
I agree with the poster that said that FF need to go a different route... the problem i found with 13 is that it didnt feel like an open world to me... if it was out on the PSP it will be a good game though... but for PS3 a person should expect more...

    btw FF8>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>FF7

    Got from another site

Square Enix 1st Production Department Premier

Its tomorrow guys!!!! What do you guys want to see? What do you'll think they show off? Hopefully some FFVsXIII gameplay. I hope it plays like Kingdom Hearts, loved KH1 and 2.

Update: This link says that 7 games are going to be revealed at the event...I have a feeling we might see FF XIII 2... looks like there are 3 unannounced games as well. One thats "Fabula Nova Crystallis Related". Then two games that are labeled as "Other Works/New Titles:

It was a combination of messing with nintendo again, merging with enix and doing business with microsoft. When they solely developed for Sony they were at their best product wise and financial wise.Basically,Square got greedy and then they sold their souls to MS and it did not pay off.The majority of their fanbase game on Playstation as evident with FF13 flopping on the 360 and Dissida having more success than Dragon Quest on the DS.Wada is also an idiot and he is square's mouth piece and has made mistake after mistake. The same goes for Capcpm,Square,Konami and Namco,None of these Jap companies are good anymore. Also square lost most of their developers who created Final Fantasy.

Yawn! FF8 is boring and too predictable. The characters are wack too and so is the plot and world.Shit is really lame and showed early signs of square losing their touch even during that generation.FF7,Xenogears,Chrono Cross>>>>>>>>>FF8.

But on a side note, they need to speed up the development of FF13 versus. Was originally supposed to come out shorty after FF13, not it's not expected to come out until late 2011, or early 2012.

According to a recent interview with Final Fantasy XIII's art director Isamu Kamikokuryou, the title was actually a much larger game before content was cut; so much so in fact, that the additional content could create another game entirely.

Final Fantasy XIII is out in Japan, and one of the major gripes happens to be the games incredible linearity; it has been described as less of an adventure and more or an arcade-style cyber-tour of Pulse and Cocoon.

According to Kamikokuryou, the removed content was already running on PS3 hardware, but was left out when the team considered the game's overall balance and volume. Whether development on the Xbox 360 version had a hand in the decision is unknown, however with Square-Enix's penchant to release "International" versions of the game, usually loaded with additional content, it seems more likely that the developers removed the content for later release as downloadable content or for use in an "International" version.

Some of the areas and content removed from the game, according to Kamikokuryou, are:

An area surrounding Lightning's home, which resembled a park.
A secret base for the resistance group Nora.
A zoo was once included as part of Nautilus Park, the amusement area, but this was scrapped.
Keep in mind that this content was already removed before the release of Final Fantasy XIII in Japan. The NTSC and PAL releases of Final Fantasy XIII will be identical to the Japanese version in every way except theme song, so readers needn't fear getting less content than Japanese gamers. We were all gypped equally.

They dumbed down the series after X-2... 12 was craptacular too, 13 was a great disappointment smmfh. Theyre dumbing down the games tho to accomodate this new generation of Infamous, Prototype, GoW, DMC fans & players alike. Back then the ppl had problems with gameplay systems like Relic, Materia, Junction & Sphere Grid.... so Square dumbed it down the best they could. I think it was foolish of them as its slowing destroying wat made ff classic in the first place. I want an RPG not an action hack n slash game where all i gotta do is mash x and triangle to beat the whole game smh.

I hope for square's sake that XIII versus is a good game, tho i kno it wont compare to 10 even, its still a step in the right direction. They prolly wont bring it back till 15, tis what happens when u let the americans get behind ur project, u get flashy hollywood graphics, super easy gameplay, no strategy just violence and sex. capitalism & profits are more a priority over originality & uniqueness ask Sega/Sonic....

I found a couple of the FF13 boss battles, and encounters to be pretty annoying compared to previous Final Fantasies. It's a good thing they added that retry feature.

There was that flying motorcycle that would OHKO you, unless you switched to sentinel immediately, and threw up defenses.

Then there was Cid, that mofo, would have him a couple hits from death, then he would bust out some combo, and kill your lead party member.

I liked the combat rope switching a lot. Debuffing with two sabs, then buffing up the party with a synergist. Then switch to Com/Com/Rav, and go straight ham on them.
