What Exactly is "The Hood"?

Damn near every nigga on the IC and in real life always wanna rep how they “grew up in the hood”. How rough does your neighborhood have to be to earn the right to claim you from the hood? Forreal tho, shit seems mad generic whenever somebody claim they‘re from the hood. I think some of yall cats just happened to live a few streets over from some hood niggas or grew up a predominately Black area, and just be like “Ok fuck it, ima rep like I’m from the hood. I’m Black, aint nobody gonna question my hoodness.”

So tell me IC, what are the credentials for a neighborhood to be considered the hood? Drop them.

Like your city can be on the murder capital list, but if you live in a cul-de-sac you can't rep the hood part....

if you can go to your nearest corner store and buy a single newport short for a quarter out the box:

if they sell "bumpers" in the liquor store where you live

if you see a strip club with a church or a daycare next to it (southern folks)

if the store lets you buy namebrand clothing with food stamps

if the man who owns the ice cream truck also runs a local bank where you can get loans from his truck

all these are clues that you live in the "hood"
