They needed to put him in the ring with someone who could take better bumps than poor ole Alex Riley. Maybe destroy Yoshi Tatsu or someone small to make the big moves look bigger.
And WTF happened to Alex Riley? Last I remember, he was crushing Miz when they broke up as a unit.
Next, if anyone else is to come back, it probably would be a smaller and more limber Trish Stratus. She's still very vocal on what happened at last year's WM with Morrison/Melina/Snooki.
