i expressed my disgust with it a while back......

this is the same thing.. ...people are far too quick to pass a generalized belief based on small samples...

    i mean i get the association... but it's lazy....and ignorant,...and closed minded.....

if they're okay with accepting that about themselves.. then that's cool......just own up to it

Nowhere did I say it's ok for people to label you a savage because of your skin color. I said it's reasonable for people to act based on their experiences because it's all they have. There is nothing wrong with a white person who has only had bad experiences with black people to be a little wary of you upon your first meeting. Now if you've shown yourself to be a reasonable human being and they still treat you like that, it's a problem.

I understand what you're saying, and you're right that fighting such generalizations would prevent tragedies like what happened with Trayvon. However, you also have to acknowledge that stereotypes are often used as a defense mechanism and it's hard to snap someone out of that when it has improved their situation. For instance, if a white person grows up in a black area spent a life of being tormented, that white person may develop a certain feeling about black people. Now if that white person moves away from the black people and his/her life gets better, that's going to further support that negative opinion. Sure you could try to hit them with logic and lead them away from their beliefs, but it's going to be real hard for your words to have an impact when his/her sum life experience tells a different story.

never said you said its ok. but you do think its reasonable, right? lol ...so in other words you are saying it is fair for someone to think i was something i wasn't based solely on interactions they have had w/ people of the same race....

    again the definition of reasonable...
    rea·son·a·ble/ˈrēz(ə)nəbəl/
    Adjective:
(of a person) Having sound judgment; fair and sensible.
Based on good sense: "a reasonable request".

at the end of the day the people allow their prejudices or stereotypes to dictate their decisions and actions without using any sort of discretion are the ignorant ones... agree?

Yeah, I can agree with that. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge and all I've been saying is that these people act based on their ignorance the best way they know how. It might not be right, but it is what it is.

He's not, I was suspicious, but this thread convinced me.

  • White people have committed more atrocities on this planet than all other ethnicities combined. They have ravaged the land, its people and their moral fiber within. And the crazy part is, they're still doing it!!!

Just an excerpt of their greatest hits:

    First Opium War
    Second Opium War
    Transatlantic slave trade
    British colonization of india
    The holocaust
    The crusades
    Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Colonization of the Americas and genocide of the indigenous populations
Colonization of Australia and genocide of the indigenous populations
Colonization of Africa and genocide of the indigenous populations
    The Iraq War
    and more...

    But we're the savages. Riiiiggghht.

I have to disagree. These are just the most "recent". These atrocities don't even scratch the surface of history so your first sentence alone is ignorant and devoid of being factual. Not being able to defend yourself against outside aggressors is an atrocity in itself.

"If you are not prepared to use force to defend civilization, then be prepared to accept barbarism." = T.S.

    Huh?

If I'm reading you right, you are basically justifying white imperialism. I don't know if you're black but if so:

  • Other than him looking like a dumbass? Nothing. Where is he anyway and why is he doing that?

idk where he is that shouldn't matter, nor should it matter why he is doing it ...

the fact of the matter is he's not harming himself, nor anyone around him ..

Ok, what's your point though? It's not like someone called dude a murderer or something.

Oh I found the savage culprit.....Look what he did. The other kids around him tried to stop it but the savage couldn't be reasoned with. He didn't even finish the 8th grade what is he doing on a college campus??

You're only judging the world with your own limited experience. Ignorance causing one to believe whatever propandga is up for it's 15 minutes on the agenda.

Read a book. Travel. Socialize. And make a better informed conclusion.

lemme tell you one thing thats common anywhere black folks are congregated together..it could be a town , anything else..Higher violence rate and various other savage behaviors than other communities....fact..

especially in the US where opportunities are so abound to NOT be that way...

we love love love to find way to excuse the ignorance amongst us by dismissing it..whenever someone calls it out the tired excuse "its just a few" comes up.....it really isnt...ignorance is the NORM amongst our group of ppl...lets start facing facts and figure out ways to move past it..

but this excuse making does not help when you see the problem as clear as day..

im black and i can draw from the other positive side of blackness..but if i wasnt black and i was just drawing conclusion based on what i see/observe around me..or through the media..i wouldnt have a positive impression of black folks AT ALL..

As I said, limited experience. You, and those that think like you, are the only ones making excuses. Showing ignorance with tired old cliche's to support your opinions. Get off WSHH and stop watching Boyz In The Hood every time in comes on. Not to make fun, but that must be what one does to make such a strong statement about "black savages".

It's 2012 and there are area's of the US where a simple thing like a black man brushing his hair is mind blowing to some people. You got immigrants that will literally follow a black man and talk slang with him as if he's a tourist attraction. Why? Cause they've never seen one in person. So I'm well aware that all some people have of us is whatever is in the media and I understand how they might get such impressions.

But just like I've told them, I'm now telling you, every black man ain't O-Dawg. Every black man ain't a rapper. And yes, my hair grows like that naturally. And while violent elements do exist in our poorer communities, you'd find some drama popping off in other poverish communties of other races. I've got one white co-worker sitting in jail right now for a violent crime. I work with two white convicts. And one other white co-worker had to pull his gun on some aggressors last weekend.

So Stop believing in the myths these people spoon you with.

While I do somewhat agree with T/S premise, anyone who bases their views of a race on a small sample of people is an idiot. There are black hoodlums just like there are white hoodlums and hispanic hoodlums and Asian hoodlums. African/Americans disenfranchised as a people, so just like any disenfranchised people, there is a higher likelihood of criminality out of desperation and kids not knowing any better. Anyone who thinks that one race is naturally more predisposed to a kind of behavior in 2012 is a fucking idiot.

I agree and disagree with the thread starter at the same time. As far as being on the metro, young people ALWAYS act stupid, of any race. I will agree that black youth who are trapped in poverty dont tend to be a little more foul than kids of any race who come from middle class homes, especially on public transportation for some reason. I have been exposed to other cultures my whole life, being muslim, or atleast raised muslim, and have often gotten into deep convos with our brothers from the Middle East and Africa. The simple truth is they do often speak of genuine concern as to why we as American Blacks are so wild. Of course, alot of these brothers/sisters are store owners, and they talk of the significant difference between their customers who are black and are other races. Of course, poverty always plays a factor, because its always the 'hood cats' that are on the most bullshit in the store as far as stealing, being disrespectful, haggling over prices, etc. Again, they know its not ALL of us, but the numbers are higher than in other groups. Also, I have a friend who works in the UAE, who told me that when going to clubs, they have a different regard for both american black men and women. They DO expect our women to be loose and easy over a little money and view us brothers as untrustworthy. We gotta look at how we allow ourselves to be portrayed int he media. While all races glamorize, to an extent, the less savory elements of their culture in music, we do it to death. I think the problem is that we as a people have always upheld the lowest common denominator amongst us. How many here remember in elementary school remember being teased for 'talking white' or being a bookworm.

My thing with the immgrant store owners in the hood. Gun store, liqour store, church, repeat. For them to say most of their unruly customers are blacks, blacks are usually they're only customers. I'm thinking that if they were in some poor italian or chinese area, they'd be saying such things about them. And they need to think about that shit IMO anyway. The land of opportunity, but they're businesses are mostly in the poor areas? sadeeqy should wonder why he can't open a business in the garden district. He might have more in common with us than he thinks.

As for our music, it's gotten to the point where we don't even control that anymore. It's gonna stay that way until artist begin to look beyond the glitz, glamour, and green hollywood seduces them with.

I can tell you my schools was segregated on the slick. Those that fell into classrooms with a majority of white students picked up whatever slang and grammar was in their enviroment. Same thing with whites kids in a class room filled with black kids. Foreigners just got in, where they fit in. People got teased for talking a certain way, but it's because they really did. If you talked white, or black, it's cause you picked on the culture of the other and spoke like it. If you was a bookworm... well, it's cause you read books all day. Nothing serious, we were just kids. At recess we all still played together. It didn't really get racial till after highschool.

But I see where you coming from. And I can't deny that such things don't exist in our communities to some degree. My point is that it ain't just us. But for some reason, everybody wants to stare at our problems without seeing their own.
