Wow can't believe it's been 13 years already. And it's aged like fine wine. 13 Years ago on 3/31/99, "The Matrix" hit theaters. I was the tender age of 19 in my freshman year of college when it dropped. I saw the trailer with the bullet-time scene and thought what is that. I went and watched the movie and was blown away. "The Matrix" became one of the Biggest Sci-Fi Action films ever made. It's effects changed Hollywood. It's thought provoking story line and theme created a cultural phenomenon. Sure the sequels were polarizing but they were still a success and brought the mythology to a whole new level. So the question is, after 13 years, where does "The Matrix" rank all time. Cause to me it's one of the greatest films ever made especially for the Sci-Fi genre. "The Matrix" became the 1st DVD to sell over a million copies. I remember it too cause it was one of the 1st DVD's I ever owned back in the day.

Jada Pickett starred in 2 of the sequels and she's married to Will Smith who was a corny rapper in the 90's
Also this movie stars Laurence Fishburne who's daughter Montana Fishburne starred in a porno with Brian Pumper (n/h) who in 2010 and 2011 put out a couple of rap songs that failed miserable...

Another thing people forget, The Matrix was rated "R", so for the series to blow like it did was amazing, it was hitting that Star Wars demo even though it was mad violent. I remember little kids sneaking into "Reloaded". If they dropped "The Matrix 4" in 3D it would shut the box office down even though people act like the sequels were weak, they line right up. That's how much impact this series had.

If anything The Matrix is indebted to Ghost In The Shell - the digital green rain, cyberspace, philosophical questioning about human existence in relation to technology and the virtual realm, plugging yourselves into machines in the back of your neck and head, numerous similar scenes, etc.
Agree with your second comment, it should've just stayed as the one film

#3 - Shoulda been the new Star Wars but the sequels were ass. But you already knew that. The whole story just went off the rails. Those fucking rave and architect scenes. Me and the Wachowskis got beef.
#4 - Inception IS better. All that philosophy shit ppl always shower The Matrix with praise for? Inception did all that better, while adding MORE substance AND making the whole thing a allegory for film making in general. Catch feelins.
#5 - God, remember how they handled the death of the actress who played The Oracle? They coulda really flipped it and made the "I had to get a new body" excuse work by casting a weird looking guy or a lil kid to play the role, BUT NO, these dumb muhfuckas just grabbed another old black lady.
#6 - I'm pretty sure there's a alternate universe where the sequels surpassed the original. Prolly the same universe where Biggie lived and trashed all those old Neptune and Timbaland beats. I'd love to move there.

The Matrix was an amalgamation of several great ideas that made it a classic: great story that was easily understood on a superficial level, but also had some esoteric philosophical ideas that hadn't been seen in big budget films before. It also had great fight choreography, great action, groundbreaking special effects and camera work that influenced many other films. In comparison Inception falls short.
Inception IMHO was overrated. I enjoyed it, but I don't like how Nolan gets a pass for fucked up editing in almost all of his films.
I do agree that the Matrix should of been what Star Wars is. I think the world of the Matrix lends itself well to other properties such as anime, videogames etc. and it's a shame that nothing is really being done with it.
