being able to download shit for free is the answer.. also whole albums arent dope anymore so why buy them? u can get the hot singles on mixtapes before dropping or u csn go to you tube and download mp3s and make mix cds of all the songs u want. Back in the day u couldnt do that. Your only access to music was the store, your home boy who bought it first, or the bootleg man.... Hell today the bootleg man is irrelevant why pay $5 when u can do it urself for free in 5 min. Growing up I had a fire ass cd collection but as I got older I stopped buying.....
Bootleging is way stronger, the record companies are more desperate and want to force feed commercial carbon copy rappers. This in turn leads to more wack albums. Some of the best albums I have purchased were not on your gold list. I also thought Jadakiss album went platinum

jadakiss album sold 1 million after about 14 months , gold and plat plaques are for albums shipped and they label has to submit/ pay for the plaque for the certification. ts really means why albums dont sell at least 500k in the states anymore. simple answer is they dont have the fan bases. and bootlegging has gone down it not where near the level it was in the mid 00s as it is today
don't make that bullshit excuse cuz on the real ARTIST aint inspiring nobody to support them or else they would BUY da shit its only cuz they have to download 20 different artist and still can't compare to a K.B. & Lil Flea!
S.P.C./Killa Klan/S.U.C. has more talent in one group then the whole mainstream!

What, do you expect all rappers to go gold, i mean the list you provided is pretty extensive and proportionally i would venture to say rap artist are doing just as well as any other category o
So you think 20 Gold artists in the last 5 years and a 5 Gold artists a year average is the same in Country music and Rock music?
Proportionally yes, if you consider the fact that more than 70% of this country is white and the african american population is less than 15%... Im not going to do the research cause i dont have the time, but im willing to bet it equals out.
???
white people don't buy hip hop? non whites don't buy country and rock?
Interesting how that worked out, thank for the numbers.
6/40 are hip hop artist which = 15%
11/40 are black artist
15% 3 percent higher than the 12% of blacks in america. I think we gotta correlation here!
If more white people were capable of making rap hits, then i think this issue would be gone lol
This was a good thread Hrap. Broke it down well, even though I think you slightly trying to cop pleas to why Ross hasn't gone Platinum but your overall research is 100% correct. Gold is the new Platinum for RnB and Hip Hop artist. Pop is even struggling. Only country is going strong cause white middle America will always buy country. It's sad that in 2011 only what 3 rappers went Platinum. Here we are in 2012 and it's looking like it's not looking good. Nicki just did 250k, she is not a lock for Platinum. Overall the music industry is dying, soon we won't even go to the store to buy music. This is why the Best Buy is losing money to Amazon and Circuit City got pretty much shut down. The whole game has changed and the Naspter buy truly changed the way we listen to music. I think it's over, just cause Adele is the only one selling doesn't even mean there's hope. Wayne lost about 2 Million fans from Carter III to Carter IV, I could see him dropping even more by the next album. Drake remained consistent between 1st and 2nd LP but he didn't increase by much. The whole game sales wise is messed up.

Slightly cop plea's as to why Ross hasn't been platinum?
That thread would be a lot more simple than this one because it would have 3 questions:
1.) How many street-oriented rappers have gone platinum since Ross debut??
2.) What was Ross biggest POP-crossover attempt??
3.) In the YMCMB era of Mullatto-magic and Pop-cross-marketing wizardry can a fat, black Geechie expect a Millie??
If Wiz couldn't get to plat with those monster singles he had then it would be foolish to expect Ross or Jeezy to do the same.

And all this shit happened cause niggas won't buy a CD from their favorite artist.
LOL, I was messing with you Hrap about the Ross Coppin Pleas thing. "Port of Miami" is passed 700k. He does have some Platinum singles. He did try to go pop with "Boss" with the T-pain feature. But since Ross Debut, 50 is the only street-oriented emcee to go Platinum with "Curtis", and Jay did it with "American Gangster" which was more a street LP for him. Outside of that I consed your point. Ross issue is that he hasn't crossed over. He done a few tracks but he won't go all the way over to the pop side. That, "I'm a Boss" with Nicki was him getting closer to the pop side. Overall I respect Ross sales, 4 Gold LP's is not easy to accomplish, i understand that Ross does keep it street so his sales will suffer for that. Nicki is also learning the hard way what happens when you Cross over. From 1.7 Million to struggling to go Platinum is where she's headed. Overall again I agree with your thread, sales are dying fast.
1. the internet has slowly made it easier and easier to steal music, it wasnt as easy to bootleg in 06 as it was in 09 and so on. The further along we get, the more people are going to bootleg, no matter who you are, you will be affected by this
2. no attatchment to artists no artist development, having a buzz right now doesnt mean anything, it means people know who you are and they may have heard one or two of your songs, it doesnt mean they will buy shit from you, there is no relatability its just over exposure and catering to the lowest common denominator. Hip Hop is the new synthpop.
3.emphasis is taken away from the actual rapping, the people who are buying albums dont give a shit about lyrics or flow, its about ppularity, radio conistency catchy instrumentals and image.
4. Hip Hop just isnt as interesting anymore, it isnt riding the whole 'taking the world by storm' and its not bringing out anything particulary new. Nothing is innovating, its just rehashing or holding on to tired gimmicks.
5. this generations has no real attatchment to a subculture, no hip hop heads, no metal heads, no scene kids, no indie crowd. no real demographic anymore, everything is just so broad everyone pretty much dresses the same and takes the same interests in the youth of today. no room for capatilizing on a culture.
Hip hop will end up being as it started out, a niche aspect of urban music that people will look for if they really want to hear it. Its lucky to been alive as long as it has been.

Real post man. You definitely did your research and actually knew about what you were talking about unlike half the guys in here.
There are a lot factors for an artist not going at least gold, but I feel Hip Hop has turned into a corporation instead of staying a culture. The artists are employees now, being artistic is no longer required, innovation is no longer needed and individuality is non existent. Some of the very things that made hip hop pure is virtually gone. It's not just about music anymore, there's more entertainment like, iphones, tablets,3DTV's and movies better video games etc. Music, to a lot people, take a back seat to a lot people's lives. So yea, if you are not at least mainstream you have a harder time going gold.
w/o reading all of this stuff...could the reason possibly have ANYTHING to do with most of the stuff that comes out is wack??...i mean seriously wack...im not talking about the gems you might find from underground cats who aint getting no shine...im talking about just wack shit from people...wack bars, wack production, wack promotion, etc...just wack
Album sales for Hip Hop are right where they are supposed to be . Hip Hop as a whole lacks musically point blank. Everyone shouldn't go Gold or Plat because their music is not good enough . The better ARTIST , not just rap niggas , deserve to sell records. When rappers stop making throw away music and start making music that connects to fans for years and not just weeks Hip Hop artist will sell more records . Of course it will never be like it was in the 90's and the early 2000's because of the infusion on music downloads. However if rappers make more timeless music SOME fans with feel more obligated to purchase their music and not download it
