Some of these grads set themselves up for failure tho ...getting these bullshit ass degrees "zoology, philosophy, art history?" wtf was they expecting ... but shit is real tho no doubt ...a bunch of people in my generation are going to be so far in debt it'll be interesting to see if in 20 years kids will be able to afford college at all..

Back in the 1940s, college wasn't that expensive. And people weren't deeply in debt like they are now.
For those saying things like "well pick the right degree" and all that, yo remember not everybody is cut to be a businessman or CEO, an engineer, lawyer or something. Some people love history, philosophy, politics or w/e. The world still needs people like that despite what how you value them. Either way I think the article is nonsense. Basically it says - don't go to college, b/c if u go ur not gonna find a job and ur gonna waste 50k. I think its nonsense and another reason WHY the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Shit if everyone is going into business to start their own business then who the hell is working ? SMH
If more people start to believe in this "fuck college" attitude we're gonna have a generation of dumb ass kids and larger wealth disparities.
This is why you research your career before and while you're in college and make sure you get the right degree.
The degrees that are in high demand are math and science. I'm not doing that because I think it's boring and have no talent for it. Not everyone wants to go into those fields, you know what I mean?
I guess it depends on if you're going to college to make money or to do what you enjoy. I went strictly to make money.
My prerogative was to find a career that would allow me to change the world in some way. It doesn't have to be a job that pays a lot of money, just a job where I can fight for political and economic justice and pays me decently.
Sadly that's the way it is, sometimes it's all about who you know. I don't think it should discourage people from going to school though. I'm in college right now for sports medicine I'll be damned if I listen to those "statistics" and drop out because it says I'm not guaranteed a job. But at the same time everybody can't own a Fortune 500 or become a CEO. Some people are actually happy with what they do. can you believe that? you can be happy without being rich.
i'm in the STEM line but i honestly don't know if that's what i wana do. at least not right now. i wana get my BA tho & join the air force so i don't have to go broke figuring out what to do next.

im all about the arts ..history ..things of that nature ...that shits great ...but im just saying being a realist ..that kind of knowledge isn't in demand with regards to our current economy ..so it should be of no surprise when you see the philosopher serving up another frapamachino at your local Starbucks pimp...
I wonder how engineers fare in this shit:
The unemployment rate for recently graduated undergraduate engineering students dropped from 6.4 percentage points in 2009 to 2 percent in 2011.
Engineering unemployment rate drops

not if you're actually doing constructive work in lieu of college. population keeps going up...people need somewhere to live...construction, electricians, plumbing, landscaping, etc will never go outa style.

i think degrees should be priced relative to their future earning potential.
no way a kid majoring in theater should have to pay $50,000 a year for his degree, alongside the engineering & science students when he'll make only a fifth of what they'll make in his lifetime. You can say, that's the student's fault for going to such an expensive school for a bullshit major.......but, sit back & think 20 to 30 years down the line. Students in the future will have extensive information on employment trends for each major & as the economy worsens & jobs dry up, you think niggas is gonna be going to Michigan, Texas or UCLA, paying 50k a year for some bullshit sociology degree, knowing he wont get a job afterward?
Something will have to happen. Either Washington will create some sort of Student Loan forgiveness program, or some of these universities will have to split up their tuitions & price these degrees based on what they're actually worth, otherwise I see alot of programs & departments being shut down once kids stop deciding to be liberal arts majors. Cost-Benefit out of wack like a motherfucka.
wow @ over 100,000 people with PhDs being janitors. What did they get their degrees in? Sanitary Science?
I call BS on some of this, not because I don't believe it's true. I call BS because the article paints it as if the job market it so bad that having a degree is of no help. I don't think that's true as much as a lot of people go into college and major in whatever is convenient for this as opposed to what they actually have some aptitude in or what actually has some demand.
If you got a degree in some form of engineering, nursing, business, etc... and you working as a cashier, something is wrong with you. If you got a degree in psychology and have no plans to go any further in school, then you probably are working as a cashier, and you're an idiot if you thought you were going to hop out of school with a bachelor's in that area and get anything worthwhile right away.
Nope, never experienced that shit. The minute I finished my bachelors, I had a job on deck ...
The problem is most college students are naive to the game. For some reason they think a degree in just any ol' thing will get them a job.
They think that college is about partying and fucking bitches instead of keeping that GPA over 3.0 so you can intern in the summer and get that real-world experience that the hiring managers are talking about. You can party and fuck bitches AFTER you get that real job. Until then, put in that work.
... People forget that all college is, is an investment in yourself. Before you enroll you should make sure the shit works out money-wise. Don't waste $50K on some bum ass degree and then come out crying because you can't get a job or because the only job you can get is paying damn near minimum wage. When shit like that happens, that's on you! You should have done the research before you threw away all that damn money!
Cosign, went to college for 2 years, got dat associate degree and make great money @ 23 working in IT field

IT is wide open right now. I am about to graduate in an IT field. After I was half way threw/thru/through?? with this degree it hit me that I was in the wrong area from what I wanted to do. IT will help later in my career but right now. certs and certificate matter.
Things change alot these days. Connections and networking is the thing to have these days. That seperates a graduate more than your grades you got. A C student with connections do better than a A+ student with no networking skills.
this shit is all fucked up. im trying to graduate by the end of 2012. im an english major so im fucked. i need to figure out how to get a teaching credential. im considering being a poetry or esl teacher down the line. it's kind of like my back up plan if i cant figure out a career im more passionate about.

yeah it's one of the best fields cuz even burger king has a network that the cash registers have to run on so technology will always be needed. I'm try a get that engineer title by 25 so I can get dat 6 figure salary and really start doing it big forreal
College is bullshit that's why I dropped out. Save your money, I went and actually got certifications in shit that's useful and I can find employment, and I'm going to school for HVAC and Plumbing right now. Everybody who I graduated with back in '07 can't find a job for shit, and if they do find a job they are just as much as I do with no degree or barely more than I do. It's a fucking scam is all it is.
