Little Brother: LeftBack

Little Brother is done. LeftBack is their last album. In all honesty, it's not like we haven't seen this coming. Once 9th Wonder left the group, they lost a big part of their marketability and chemistry. GetBack was a great album in its own right, but it just wasn't the same group took underground hip hop by storm with every album and mixtape. They lost a lot of the chemistry that made them so successful in the first place. LeftBack has exactly the same problem: Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh are as good as ever, but their music just isn't that unique anymore.

"Good beats, good rhymes, what more do ya'll want?" Phonte wrote that back in 2007, and it's just as true today - Little Brother cranks out quality music, and there's not much to complain about. Once the beat starts, it's the same formula - Phonte spits some of the best, most clever verses in hip hop, and Big Pooh supports with a louder, blunter style. And as always, it works great.

The beats part of the equation is more of a mixed bag. There are three types of beats here: cheap 9th Wonder knockoffs, R&B wannabe cuts, and the greatness of "24" (more on that later). After opening on a terrible note in "Curtain Call," the production is solid, but completely unextraordinary. The first half of the album is sounds like it was left off The Minstrel Show, and the second half's R&B cuts are both basic and unexciting. They function just well enough to stay out of the way, which is OK when the rappers are this good, but not good enough to make great music.

The album is pretty good. I'd say about a 3.5 out 5, but in comparison to the LB discography, it's borderline horrible. Tigallo for Dolo, Curtain Call, Table For Two, Second Chances, and Go Off Go On, and 24 are the only noteworthy joints for me.. but none of those are classics, except Tigallo 4 Dolo and Table For Two

It's a great album for true hip hop fans. Way better than Getback imo.

In what way? I loved GetBack, and this to me was just a huge letdown. Worse beats, worse rhymes (or recycled ones), and just a worse experience. I don't think they really cared about it.

Whoa I dont know about that. I think Leftback is a watered down version of The Listening. Very mellow album but solid none the less. Only downfalls are the 2 old tracks and maybe a couple new ones.

It was aight up until the second half of the CD when they dropped those remixes from their past 2-3 albums. They didn't even change the verses.

To me, it was like they ran out of beats/producers and simply when the remix route to be used as filler. Once I saw tracks 9-11 as part two's to songs that were already released, I knew something was wrong. 9th should have let them put Star on the album just to help them out.

Tigolo for Dolo is probably the most memoriable kut off the album.

Just copped it and listened to it...

Nothing mind blowing... production was decent, lyrics were alright... I really expected them to bow out on a high though...

3/5 for me... it's not the same without 9th...

I thought it was OK. But I was dissappointed at the remixed tracks. Guess this really IS the end...damn.

Personal Favs: Curtain Call, Tiggalo For Dolo, Revenge.

I always felt that with 9th gone, the best direction they've could've gone in was the type of style of they showed in 24

leftback is a 4/5 for me..but still the weakest studio album they've dropped...but still of a qulity ofwhich would still be out of most artists reach..tthe main dissapointment was the re-hashed mixes, the non-inclusion of star and i thought revenge was a lil weak..but still a class act, gutted its the end!

Pooh is always slept on...he's gotten better with each album, something that I cant say about most rappers.

i skimmed thru that new david banner album

those beats would have sounded great with phonte rapping over them.

Great lyrics as always but average production IMO. Not a very good bow out album like Slum Village's Villa Manifesto?

    I agree.

Which reminds me I just got a new sound system.

    Lemme cut it on.

And I dont think Phonte Coleman is rapping anymore...becuase of that line in Tiggalo for Dolo. :/

i stopped listening to Little brother after Minstrel Show.

They had a perfect chance in 2004 to blow up when kanye was on the rise.

But after that, it was just postponing the inevitable.

3.5 out of 5...lyrically its on point, production is lacking as others have stated. Get enough pt 2 goes hard imo
