people say that sales = quality. alot of people believe that if 109 million buy an album, it must be good, cuz they cant all be wrong. this is what they said in the MJ thread. this is a logical fallacy, cuz you are appealing to the masses. And i took an English class, and we had to debate many times, My professor tought us about logical fallacies, and that was one of them. Appeal to PopularityExplanationAppeals to popularity suggest that an idea must be true simply because it is widely held. This is a fallacy because popular opinion can be, and quite often is, mistaken. Hindsight makes this clear: there were times when the majority of the population believed that the Earth is the still centre of the universe, and that diseases are caused by evil spirits; neither of these ideas was true, despite its popularity. Example(1) Most people believe in a god or ‘higher power’. Therefore: (2) God, or at least a higher power, must exist. This argument is an appeal to popularity because it suggests that God must exist based solely on the popularity of belief in God. An atheist could, however, accept the premise of this argument (the claim that belief in God is widespread) but reject its conclusion without inconsistency.

He also taught you though that appealing to the masses is what gets you a win the majority of the time. To most people gettng the win is far more important than giving the truth. I remember those bogus ass classes too. Just remember to try to look beyond what you are being taught because all knowledge isn't 100%. For instance look at the example that you used to describe a logical fallacy, yet the example you used is quit possibly the worst one you could have used. Maybe you mean Appeal to belief. THink about that for a minute

If you sell millions and millions and millions of albums, it just means that your music is easily accessible...and that you're popular. Album sales are only a good measurement of how big of a star you are; not how good your music is. Making music that caters to the mainstream doesn't equate to quality.

What makes music good is subjective. you can't prove wether or not music is good or bad.

actually no, she told me the only time general consensus matters is when you have to vote for something. other than that, you should never say anything is a fact solely based on general consensus. the bottom example isnt the greatest, but i like the top examples back in the day general consensus was that the earth was flat and was the center of the universe, and that diseases were caused by evil spirits. all of those were PROVEN to be false

She is giving you and every other impressionable student these things in a bubble and nt in practice. Take some phylosophy if you hven't already and you will see the exact opposite presented to you. Remember Professors are just giving to you what someone gave to them. Remember also these same people change thier minds and views every 10 years or so. You can go into a board room and try some of these tactics with other thinking people and see what your outcome is. For instance right here give to me an example of Good Music
