UN: Major inequality in US cities

Cities in Africa had the highest levels of disparity, according to the UN report [GALLO/GETTY]

Levels
of economic disparity in major US cities, including New York and
Washington DC, are comparable to those of African cities, a United
Nations report has concluded.

The UN-Habitat report "State of the World's Cities" released on
Thursday said that, while the US has less poverty than many cities in
the developed world, inequality is high, rising above the international
"alert" line.

It said race was a key factor for US economic inequality.

"The life expectancy of African Americans in the United States is
about the same as that of people living in China and some states of
India, despite the fact that the United States is far richer than the
other two countries," it said.

In
one example, the report cited figures from western New York state,
where 40 per cent of black, Hispanic and ethnically-mixed households
earned less than $15,000 in 1999, as compared to 15 per cent of white
households.

Beijing 'most equal'

The most balanced city, both in Asia and in the world, is Beijing,
the capital of China,  whereas the least egalitarian in Asia is Hong
Kong, the Chinese-administered former British colony, the report found.

The world's most equal cities are located, on average, in western Europe, it said.

Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Slovenia were among those with the lowest levels of inequality, it said.

In Latin America, Brazilian cities "have the greatest disparities in income distribution in the world," the UN repot said.

Brazil is struggling to control rising unemployment and declining wages.

Cities in sub-Saharan Africa have the world's highest levels of
urban poverty, with more than half of city residents living below the
poverty line.

The report also said cities in South Africa and Namibia continue to
have extremely high levels of income inequality, despite the end of
apartheid early in the 1990s.

He who commits injustice is ever made more wretched than he who suffers it. - Plato

I have gained this by philosophy that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law. - Aristotle

Democracy... is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder; and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequals alike.

Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than to convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys a community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends by defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

YOu're doing cancer research, if you could get cancer in any country and money or coverage was not an issue, which country would you want to be treated in?

I think its pretty sad that the infant mortality rate is so high, that must say something about quality or care

well the article did mention the average lifespan of some minorities, which led me to say that. today in the lab we were actually talking about how hard it is to get funding these days. we arent really on the cutting edge anymore, everyone else caught up. technology and medicine are no longer north american qualities.

haha. actually minorities are more likley to get shit like diabetes, asthma, disorders we have absolutely no cure for and has only minimal treatments or therapies. and stuff like that usually stems from poor education and low income, which translates into poor diet and poor health choices.

1/3rd of all cancer also stems from poor diet, so regardless of income, all uneducated people who are unaware of the link between food and cancer are more at risk. on top of that, gene therapy and other new methods for treating cancer are still in the openning stages. we dont know that much, we need more funding but its getting tight. the first thing they cut are social programs (educating people about health, providing outlets for underpriveledged people) and research (looking for keys to beating these disorders).

throw the fact that 1 in 4 americans has a mental illness (and the last time i checked, mental illness tends to be genetically based, mostly, so there isnt much of a discretion of income, unless jesus just really hates poor people). you have quite a system based on quack-fuckery and nonsensical-bubble-yum politics.

I was reading an article, a while ago, how income plays a major factor in health for the reasons you cited. ITs too bad when a nation with so much wealth is so neglectful in terms of providing universal health care. Oh well, I guess taking taxes to pay for health care is stealing.

thats what happens when you have the richest 400 americans wealthier than the poorest 150 million americans.

i tell people that if they want to see a 3rd world city, just go to LA. a small elite owning most land and business while the vast majority are just hovering above the poverty line, and a large portion under it.

in class we were discussing stem cell research and we were talking about how people literally do not know what a "cell" is, but somehow want to formulate an argument against stem-CELL research. about how people think stem cell research is somehow related to killing babies or abortions. its ridiculous.

This isn't new, any sociologist can tell you this. Hell, read up on William Julius Wilson and his theory of Hyperghettoization. His conclusion is pretty much that the US can't claim it offers equal rights to everyone when there's still so much segregation in the cities.

Anarchism is not a romantic fable but the hardheaded realization, based on five thousand years of experience, that we cannot entrust the management of our lives to kings, priests, politicians, generals, and county commissioners.

Anarchy is the true nature of all things. Monarchy, democracy, communism, all useless forms to control the human mind. But a mind cannot be controlled. It cannot be restrained. It has no boundaries. It has its will. Anarchy is the true nature of all things.

Anarchism means you should be free; that no one should enslave you, boss you, rob you, or impose upon you. It means you should be free to do the things you want to do; and that you should not be compelled to do what you do not want to do. (...) That is to say, that there should be no war, no violence used by one set of men against another, no monopoly and no poverty, no oppression, no taking advantage of your fellow-man. In short, Anarchism means a condition or society where all men and women are free, and where all enjoy equally the benefits of an ordered and sensible life.
