Israel is poised to launch a major ground offensive into Gaza tonight after allowing hundreds of foreigners living in the devastated territory to evacuate.
After a week of air strikes that have killed at least 420 Palestinians and left scores of buildings in rubble, the Israeli army was set to fling hundreds of troops and tanks into a blitz to stamp out Hamas’s military wing, The Times understands.
Artillery barrages were also being fired into the strip while aircraft dropped bombs on open ground that the army will need to cross, and where Hamas has placed mines and dug tunnels to allow its guerrillas to outflank the invaders.
Support for Operation Cast Lead is sky high in Israel, with polls showing that almost 85 per cent of the public backing the campaign.
There is also majority support for expanding it into a ground campaign, despite the dangers of high casualties in an urban battlefield against highly trained and motivated guerrillas waging war on their own turf. Almost 42 per cent of Israelis wanted the army to move in, while 39 percent favoured a continued air campaign.
Hamas has an estimated 15,000 fighters who have used the 18 months that they have controlled the strip to hone their skills and transform a militia into a small army. Hamas’s military wing has been waiting for a ground offensive to face the Israeli army in open combat, despite Israel’s vast military superiority.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w … 434559.ece is this Israel's form of gun boat diplomacy or actually a real attempt at dealing hamas a death blow?

nope a ground offensive is imminent if the rocket attacks don't stop. Israel could be using this troops as a bargaining chip during peace negotiations.

I hope the rocket attacks don't stop, i hope they intensify. What if Hamas is totally destroyed and defeated, what would that accomplish, seriously, will that stop the occupation of Palestinian lands, will it stop settlements?

you know it's easy to call for more rocket attacks from the comfort of one's home in Michigan. live video of gaza on CNN shows the consequences people of Gaza face for these attacks. i doubt hamas can ever be destroyed, it's political influence could be neutralized though. the issue of the occupation and settlement can only be addressed on a negotiation table and not through warfare.

It is easy for you to support the Israeli action from the comfort of your home. Please don't talk about the people of Gaza like you care. What if Israel doesn't want to negotiate, even with the truce they were still building settlements, even all those years with Arafat running around they were building settlements, negotiations with Israel is a joke.

i think it's easy to say who cares about gaza, the poster calling for more killings or the poster calling for negotiation. i've made my stance known on the settlements. what do u think would happen in a ground invasion?

I'm calling for the rights of an occupied people to fight their colonizer. What will happen if Israel invades, nothing really, just more killing of mainly Palestinians but hopefully the resistance can kill a lot of Israeli soldiers or take some hostage and continue to fire missles at the same time, Israel will get out having accomplished nothing and feeling humiliated in my opinion like they did after the Lebanon war. As long as you want to continue the occupation and settlements, nothing is going to change. You say you are against settlements, so how do we stop it? Why would Israel stop building settlements if it doesn't have to, if it is not forced to why would they? Israel was offered full recognition, it refused, Arafat the pig gave them everything they wanted and they still shitted on him and blamed him for everything even though this motherfucker gave them so much, things that would not be acceptable by most Palestinians, Israel is obviously not interested in peace, Israel has the upper hand, it has the US on its side and the extremist are much more powerful than we want to believe in Israel.

israel's ground offensive will do nothing but piss palestinians and the sympathizers off more, thereby making hamas stronger. even if u kill the leaders, they will be replaced. people keep mistakenly seeing this situation as an israeli army vs a palestinian army, as if there is a military solution to this. if it was really that simple, then israel would have won a long time ago. the only way for israel to defeat hamas (at least in their current state) is to stop giving people a reason to hate them. stop building settlements and remove the existing ones, they going to have to make some concessions on every level, but they're too scared or stubborn to do that, so this bullshit will continue. and if hamas wanted to defeat israel, them and there sympathizers would have to get a bigger, more powerful lobby than israel's and start paying these politicians off since thats the only reason why we support them. the u.s. and israel is like "master blaster" from that mad max movie.

okay, i'm going to attempt to ignore the politics of the situation in at least this thread and say that this ground offensive is not going to work. i'm going on the record saying that Israel's not going to be able to "stamp out" Hamas' military wing because a) the offensive just isn't going to be that effective and b) i don't see how you stamp it out for good unless Hamas is entirely destroyed and, obviously, i don't see it happening. but we'll see if Israel wants to try and prove me wrong? also, two nitpicks of that article: 01. how the fuck is 42 percent of people wanting the army to move in "majority support?" i need that comment clarified ASAP. 02. what's with Hamas supposedly wanting to face the Israeli's in "open combat?" this seems to contradict the notion that they're going to wage a guerrilla conflict.
