People keep missing the point I'm trying to make : the Riot of '67 did the most harm to Detroit ..it drove the whites out of the Detroit to the suburbs, so it was nearly impossible to build an mall or anything in the '70s, until Coleman took over, but he kept most of the money in downtown (the RenCen, Cobo (and taking down the Olympia --where Pistons used to play), the only closest mall at that time was I think Fairlane out in the suburb.
Suburbanites actually refused to approved of smaller strip mall and bigger malls because they didn't want the blacks in Detroit coming through. Just 5 minutes east of downtown Detroit up on Jefferson Ave is Grosse Pointe, which is home to some of the RICHEST whites in the Metro Detroit area, and they have all these bontique and high end model shops and shit that the Grosse Pointe police actually patrol those areas in force and if store owners/patrons see a black person, they immediatley call and alert police to said store......
Remember the "Brawl at the Palace" ? Pacers vs Pistons? That was started by Suburbanites not true Detroiters! True Detroiters can't even afford most time to go to any playoffs games, and like my grandpa use to say, a true Detroiter wouldn't had waste those expensive cups of beers on Artest...so the actual city of Detroit get a black eye from the suburbs....the suburbs are the ones perpetrating the negative image of Detroit, because they are still mad they were run out of the city in '67 !
