He's an actor playing a rapper. I'm not talking about him being from a suburban background and being half Jewish, growing up around Jewish and white folks. Those are factors he had no control of and it doesn't matter TBH. Beastie Boys and Serch & Pete Nice were hip hop.
I'm talking about him not being hip hop and not being an emcee. This kid wouldn't have gotten on in the early 90ties because heads wouldn't have accepted him.
How you gonna call yourself an emcee and you can't cypher? This n*gga can't even spit writtens when put on the spot. He embarassed himself twice when he had to cypher with Flex and Tim Westwood. Being an actor he can play a rapper very well, but he ain't no emcee.
I couldn't have said it better.
Dude isn't wack, but he seems like a wannabe IMO. Not saying he's a fake gangsta or raps like a thug, but he emulates what's popular in hiphop. Rapping about sipping syrup, kush, saying he's the "releast nigga in the game", half the time he's a wannabe Houston rapper, etc. He came into the game trying to rap like Joe Budden, but switched it up when he realized that jocking the south's swag was the best look (not saying he's the only one that did it tho).
He also loses points for turning a classic Gil Scott Heron song into a love duet with Rihanna. Songs like "Proud of You" are also weak as hell.
That's what's lame about him IMO.
I do give him credit for his underground work (songs with Saukrates, Elzhi, Phonte, Bun B, etc) and being a student of real hiphop tho. It's impressive how a suburban Toronto kid could master flowing on beat and even rap like he's a hiphop vet sometimes. Crazy how he shouted out Dice Raw in the beginning of "5 AM In Dallas" and shouted out Phife and Ali Shaheed Muhammad on his first album.
