Beat boxing is a form of vocal percussion in which the artist's voice creates the sounds of drumbeats, rhythm, and other musical sounds, or as people on the street put it, "It's when you make a beat outta your mouth. "It's considered one of the nine basic elements of hip-hop culture. Join master beat box artist Emanon for this introduction to the basics of beat boxing.
Sampling, Hip-Hop and Postmodernism Workshop
Thursday, December 15, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Instructor: DJ Demo, Antoine "RL" Joyce and Dan Friedman
A core creative method of hip-hop is "sampling" , the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or beat or break in a different sound recording of a different song. It reflects both the change in musical composition made possible by the computer and the postmodern contention that the "new" consists of the recycling and reorganization of the "old." Join hip-hop artists DJ Demo and Antoine "RL" Joyce and cultural historian Dan Friedman in a conversation and listening workshop that explores the questions and challenges raised by "sampling."
