    what about cigarettes (at least in teh context of the U.S.)? weren't they very popular in the 50s, but nobody knew anything about the negative health effects?

    From what I've read, i think most people behind the creation of the internet expected it to change the world and the world is mostly aware that it does. Seems their talking more about things people don't normally acknowledge as world changing but have great impact on civilization.
