He’ll be back! James Cameron, who regains certain rights to his prized creation The Terminator in 2019, is godfathering a new iteration of the film that might finally get it right in drawing a close in the battle between humans and Skynet. Sources said that Cameron, whose copyright reversion happens 35 years after the release of the 1984 classic, is in early talks with Deadpool director and VFX wiz Tim Miller to direct a reboot and conclusion of one of cinema’s great science fiction tales. David Ellison, whose Skydance co-financed Terminator Genisys, is bankrolling an exploratory effort that includes engaging some top-flight science fiction authors to find the movie creatively. Ellison still holds many Terminator rights, after his 2013 acquisition from sister and Annapurna principal Megan Ellison. She bought them in 2011 at Cannes for $20 million.

This is the latest development in an ongoing saga. Indeed, The Terminator might have endured the craziest road of any billion dollar movie franchise, going back to when Cameron — who only had Piranha 2 under his belt as director — sold the rights to his scripted project for $1 to producer Gale Ann Hurd, with the stipulation he could not be fired as director. The result was a 1984 sci-fi classic, that launched his star and that of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Cameron came back and topped himself to write and direct he blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but he washed his hands of the property after that. He mentioned to producers Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna his plans to buy the rights back from Carolco bankruptcy. They beat him to the punch, figuring he would still participate, but Cameron responded by walking away. He didn’t participate in the three films that followed, or the TV show The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The rights ended up with Pacificor, which paid $29.5 million, and Megan Ellison bought them after that company floundered. Cameron has had zero involvement since then, and has largely been silent. The exception was on the last picture, Terminator Genisys. Perhaps because his old buddy and True Lies star Schwarzenegger had returned as the title character, Cameron was generous in his assessment, reportedly saying that the Alan Taylor-directed film had reinvigorated and created a renaissance for the franchise.

Audiences disagreed and the franchise seemed out of gas when the $155 million grossed $440 million worldwide, but didn’t do nearly well enough in the U.S. Perhaps Cameron was foreshadowing his own future return to the franchise. Much the way that Sony used to rush Spider-Man movies to stay ahead of a rights reversion ticking clock, it was always known that Cameron would regain clout eventually. It didn’t seem that Skydance or Paramount had much interest continuing the creative track of the last film, but real creative involvement by Cameron, even if he doesn’t direct, changes the whole ballgame. One only has to look at Aliens, True Lies, Titanic or Avatar to see what he is capable of creatively when he puts his mind to something.

Terminator Salvation was garbage pail juice. It made Terminator 3 look like Terminator 2.

No sign. I actually thought it was a step in the right direction. Now the last Terminator Genysis was so bad, people told me to avoid it.

It turned the kick ass war from The Terminator into a boring ass music video with transformers cameos and very useless character including the protagonist. That movie was a colossal mistake and it's poor reception definitely proved it.

At least Terminator Genysis was actually kinda entertaining despite being garbage.

🤬 , NO. You're so much better than this, James. If there's any franchise that has run its course and needs a mercy 🤬 , its this one. How many timelines we on now? How we gonna explain the T-100 looking old as 🤬 this time? Does anyone actually care about John Connor?

My 🤬 you got 4 🤬 Avatar sequels you supposed to be working on....

I think irreparable harm has been done. Bout 15 🤬 done played John Connor. He'd have to totally ditch all that 🤬 about the Connors, the T-100 and start with a fresh slate of all new characters.

Or he can just make a future war movie consistent with the war he showed in his 2 Terminator movies in order to close the loop and wash the bad taste out of fans mouths left by that watered down piece of hollywood garbage that is Terminator Salvation.

At least T3 had it's last 20 minutes to redeem it. Salvation had nothing. 🤬 I hate that movie lol.

Maybe he can get to the nitty gritty. Who was originally John Connors father? Maybe he'll go further back than 1 and we can see the original timeline before anyone or anything was ever sent back. Before a time loop or a alternate timeline was created. Terminator 1 and 2 did nothing but created multiple timelines with infinity endings. Why can't we catch a glimpse of the original timeline.

This. Cameron returning to the Terminator franchise even though he created it just shows Hollywood has crashed and burned creatively...

Still want to see the future war movie with the purple laser guns. After than there isn't really anything that can be done unless they go in another direction not including the Connors.

It really was. Even Cameron himself gave them huge props for that. It took 🤬 .

I thought the movie was just so so. Never saw it in theaters cause I thought it would be worse but the action and stunts were serviceable. I also liked the more neutral T-800 thought that was interesting as opposed to the straight up hero and villain from the previous 2. The comedy was it's biggest problem cause it sucked for the most part.

That last 20 minutes though whoo!!! So good I actually saw Terminator Salvation on opening weekend cause it was by the same writers. Yet they completely failed to deliver on their promise smh

Recently I've begun rooting for the machines bc people are idiots. Look no further than any comments section for confirmation.

I just hope this entry is told from Skynets POV and we get to see some cool Mortal Kombat/X-Men: DOFP-style fatalities.
