The Essential Artist attempts to put the artistic merit of heavy metal and hip hop in an historic context from ancient Egypt, through the poets of England, the American muckrakers, and painters of Spain and Canada; demonstrate the value and tangible contributions of the arts to society's well-being.

Part of the reason I appreciate having done this research is that, when I proposed the idea to my professor of 19th century English literature, she dismissed it and suggested I study a "more serious" art form. I said to her that her response is precisely why I'm doing my research on heavy metal and hip hop - the "establishment" wants to decide what is art and what is not without fair academic evaluation; yet if these two forms are given a fair evaluation, I'm sure it will be found that indeed, they are among the truest arts in the history of art.

For those so inclined to skim through it, please let me know what you think.
